The wider storm
A southwest mid- and upper-level flow pattern of modest strength was in place across the Ohio Valley on May 24th. Ample moisture was present across central Kentucky, with precipitable water values of 1.7 to 1.8 inches observed during the late morning and early afternoon hours. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms moved across Kentucky during this time period, with narrow corridors of heavy rainfall amounts occurring across portions of the Bluegrass region where multiple lines of storms moved through. The most significant of these heavy rainfall swaths led to flash flooding across portions of Nicholas County, where multiple low water crossings and roads near small streams were submerged by sudden rises in water levels.
