The wider storm
A cluster of thunderstorms in West Virginia morphed into a weak mesoscale convective system as it crossed the Appalachians and into Virginia. While a mid-level shortwave provided a source of lift, MLCAPE of at least 1,000 J/kg and 20-30 knot bulk shear was just enough to organize storms to deliver damaging wind gusts to the Piedmont of Virginia. The fast nature of the system prevented any flooding for Virginia in spite of anomalously high PWAT values of 1.70-2.00 inches.
Began near Huddleston (37.1312, -79.5271).
