The wider storm
Multiple mesoscale convective vortices triggered a line of storms that brought damaging wind gusts the New River Valley and the Piedmont. Mesoscale conditions were not the most ideal for severe weather development. Bulk shear struggled to get above 20 knots, mid-level lapse rates were about 5.5 C/km, and DAPE only up went up 500 J/kg. However, sufficient surface heating and moisture resulted in CAPE of at least 1000 J/kg which allowed for some decent thunderstorm development after the MCV trigger. There was one notable storm that brought down a swath of trees in Roanoke County and went straight eastward and brought more trees down in Charlotte County. Broad rotation was noted in the SRV data by the time it reached Charlotte County with a 59.3 mph velocity gate recorded at around 7250 feet.
Began near Womacks (37.0900, -78.7200).
