The wider storm
Strong to severe thunderstorms developed across portions of northwestern Arkansas during the late afternoon of the 13th, along a pre-existing outflow boundary from earlier organized thunderstorms. The atmosphere became very unstable during the afternoon across the region, and deep layer wind shear was strong. This combination resulted in several supercell thunderstorms developing, which produced large hail up to quarter size and damaging wind gusts.
Thunderstorms also developed along a cold front stretching across south central Kansas during the late afternoon and early evening. These thunderstorms moved southeast across northwest Arkansas during the evening and organized into a squall line, which produced damaging wind.
Began near Lowell (36.2100, -94.1400).
