An embedded shortwave moved northeast through a broad upper-level trough while increasing midlevel winds aided thunderstorm organization across the central Gulf Coast. Ample atmospheric moisture in the local soundings and strong instability supported expanding afternoon convection with very efficient rainfall. Storms aligned with the southwesterly steering flow, allowing localized training and flash flooding near Gulfport.
