What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A NWS ground survey confirmed an EF-1 tornado with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph tracked across portions of southeast Pike. This tornado began near Smithburg, MS at the intersection of Mount Herman Road Silver Drive where it uprooted a tree and snapped branches. Additional EF-0 tree damage was identified on Blanchard and Smithburg roads. The tornado peaked in intensity as an EF-1 as it crossed over Harold Alford Road uprooting and snapping several trees as well as taking down wooden transmission lines. At this point, the tornado exited Pike County and entered Walthall County.

The wider storm

A slowly advancing cold front was positioned beneath strong west-southwesterly flow downstream of a broad upper-level trough with embedded shortwaves. A moist low level layer and strong instability combined with strengthening deep-layer and low-level wind shear to support discrete supercells across southwest and southern Mississippi during the late afternoon and evening. These storms produced large hail and multiple tornadoes over southwest Mississippi, one EF1 and one EF2 tornado.

Began near Smithburg (31.0200, -90.2900).
