What the National Weather Service wrote

Emergency manager and public reported flash flooding developed in the Crooked Creek basin after 2 to 3.5 inches of rain fell along the Mecklenburg/Union County line in just a couple of hours. This was on the heels of a string of days that saw scattered afternoon thunderstorms bring heavy rainfall to the area. Flooding of a parking lot adjacent to the intersection of Indian Trail Fairview Rd and Idlewild Rd was reported and a small portion of Indian Trail Fairview Rd was closed as a result. The lower level of a home flooded near the intersection of White Oak Ln and Cupped Oak Dr, as did the intersection itself. Other roads reported to have flooded included Lawyers Rd at N Rocky River Rd and Oak Spring Rd.

The wider storm

A cluster of thunderstorms developed across the North Carolina Piedmont during the morning in advance of a cold front. The relative slow movement of the cluster resulted in heavy-to-torrential rainfall that continued for a couple of hours along the Mecklenburg/Union County line, with flash flooding developing across northern Union County.

Began near Indian Trail (35.1040, -80.6720).
