The wider storm
During the afternoon and evening of June 26th, 2026, isolated showers and non-severe thunderstorms developed and tracked through eastern New York. Most of this convection remained to the north and east of the Hudson River Valley, but one shower developed just south and west of Albany just before 1 PM. As this shower tracked south and east into Columbia County, it grew stronger, producing locally heavy rainfall rates and gusty winds. In fact, the Kinderhook Mesonet site recorded a peak wind gust of 41 mph associated with this shower. As a result of this gust, the New York State Department of Transportation reported a downed tree and downed wires that subsequently caused the closure of US 9 going both directions between Main Street and NY 9H.
