The wider storm
On June 10, 2026, a warm front pushing across the NWS Buffalo region tapped into a hot, humid airmass with dewpoints in the upper 60s and 70s, setting the stage for organized summer convection. As a mid-level disturbance tracked over the Great Lakes, multi-cell thunderstorm clusters formed over Western New York and consolidated into linear segments, prompting SPC Severe Thunderstorm risks for damaging wind gusts and hail. Simultaneously, atmospheric precipitable water levels near 1.5 inches triggered localized heavy downpours up to 1.5 inches per hour, leading to WPC Marginal Excessive Rainfall risks and minor urban flooding in low-lying areas. Convective activity waned overnight with the loss of diurnal heating, giving way to cold air advection behind the cold front that fueled early-season lake-induced instability and marine hazards across Lakes Erie and Ontario.
Began near Westfield (42.3100, -79.5700).
