The wider storm
On June 11, 2026, a cold front pushed through Western New York, trailing a negatively tilted upper-level low over the Great Lakes that ushered in a cooler, fall-like airmass. The Storm Prediction Center outlined a Marginal Risk for the region, highlighting that 0'6 km bulk shear around 45 knots combined with low-level lapse rates of 6.5'7.0 C/km would support a few isolated strong-to-severe storms capable of producing localized damaging wind gusts and large hail. With precipitable water values and deep tropical moisture shifting eastward ahead of the main line, the Weather Prediction Center noted a diminishing overall flash flood threat across Western New York, though brief heavy downpours remained possible during afternoon heating. By evening, NWS Buffalo Area Forecast Discussions focused on the sharp drop in 850 mb temperatures to +7 C to +8 C over the warm lake waters, which generated lake-enhanced rain showers and created favorable conditions for waterspouts downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario overnight.
