The wider storm
A weak low-pressure center over northwest North Dakota progressed southeast into Minnesota on June 23rd. Increased moisture advection ahead of a surface cold front would aid in the development of thunderstorms across the southern half of Minnesota by late morning. Mixed layer instability combined with sufficient wind shear did manage to support a few cells to produce large hail. Hail stones mainly ranged between quarter to golf ball size. The largest hailstone measured was 2.5 inches 6 miles NNW of Cosmos (Meeker County). Farther to the southeast in Rice County, a brief funnel cloud developed between Faribault and Kenyon but was never reported as reaching the ground.
Began near Cannon City (44.3003, -93.1745).
