What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

NWS survey started where there was sporadic tree damage in Pittsfield and south for a few miles before reaching an area that had much more concentrated damage. A narrow corridor of damage was found just off County highway 46 a few hundred yards into the

woods. This concentrated area of damage followed the road. Accounts of residents helped confirm that this was likely a tornado. Damage became more sporadic downhill towards Elm Grove and State Route 51, but was still in line with the damage

observed already. In West Laurens, the amount of tree damage picked up, likely from outflow winds in town. Headed south of town down Crawford

Road, the damage became more concentrated once again. Many of the

trees along and east of Crawford road were also falling in a southwest

direction with tree damage not concentrated and more random.

West of Crawford, another concentrated corridor of tree damage was found, with vortex intensifying as it crossed a large, open yard before it headed into the forest once again.

Over the top of the hill, the broken off trees continued down

past a lake where the significant tree damage quickly came to an

end. With the lack of any damage corridors or trees falling in a convergent

pattern after this point, this was found to be the end of the

track.

The wider storm

A strong mesoscale convective system of thunderstorms dropped southward out of Ontario into Central NY, moving into an unusually unstable and sufficiently sheared environment. This supported severe thunderstorms with widespread damaging winds, an isolated EF1 tornado, and hail. Heavy rainfall also occurred as deep moisture surged northward from the Ohio Valley.

Began near Cardtown (42.6258, -75.2398).
