The wider storm
A potent mid-level shortwave brought a cold front to the Mid-Atlantic on the afternoon and evening of June 22. Thunderstorms ahead of the front developed and delivered damaging wind gusts to Greenbrier County. Surface air temperatures in the mid-70s and dew points in the 60s provided enough instability for storms to intensify. While DCAPE was only a few hundred and low compared to the areas east of the Blue Ridge, surface CAPE of 1000-2000 J/kg and bulk shear of 25-35 knots allowed severe thunderstorms to evolve and knock over several trees in the area.
Began near Rockland (37.7224, -80.5002).
