What EF2 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF2 is considerable damage: roofs torn off well-built houses, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, consistent with estimated gusts of 111–135 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

This QLCS tornado likely initially developed just south of the North Canadian River to the northwest of El Reno. The tornado moved southeast breaking a utility pole on Jones Road just west of Reformatory Road. Continuing southeast, the tornado moved through a neighborhood east of Reformatory Road. At least two homes had most of the roof removed with a partial collapse of the garage. A number of other homes had varying degrees of roof damage. Trees and fences were also damaged through this neighborhood. The tornado dissipated south of this neighborhood before reaching Business Highway 40.

The wider storm

An intense mesoscale convective system (MCS), later classified as a derecho, swept across much of Oklahoma and portions of western-north Texas during the late evening of the 21st and predawn hours of the 22nd. Widespread reports of thunderstorm wind damage were received, especially from northwestern into central Oklahoma, including several observations of 80-100 mph gusts. This system also produced several tornadoes in central Oklahoma, including an EF-2 tornado near El Reno, OK. A slow-moving supercell preceded the convective line during the mid-evening of the 21st, producing reports of large hail west of Woodward, OK before dissipating.

Began near Concho (35.5630, -98.0040).
