The wider storm

A prolonged period of excessive heat impacted eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa from June 28 into June 30, 2026. The heat was supported by a strong mid- to upper-level ridge building into the central Plains. A warm front lifted northward across the area early on June 28, with temperatures rapidly rising in its wake. Daily high temperatures peaked in the upper 90s to low 100s, while southerly low-level flow ushered in dewpoints in the 70s. As a result, daily maximum heat index values peaked in the 105 to 115-degree range. In addition, little overnight relief was observed, with heat index values remaining at or above 75 degrees for at least 48 consecutive hours throughout the period.
