The wider storm

Scattered to numerous thunderstorms impacted northwest Kansas from the mid-afternoon hours through the late evening hours on the 20th, in vicinity of deepening low pressure over eastern Colorado. Thunderstorms started out as more isolated and moved eastward. With time, thunderstorms congealed into a large complex and moved more southeastward. High amounts of atmospheric instability and wind shear supported several higher-end severe weather reports, including baseball size hail in Sheridan County, and up to 100 mph winds in Thomas County. The inflow winds with the thunderstorm complex were so high they caused dust storm conditions. Dust storm conditions also occurred with the outflow winds from the thunderstorm complex. These thunderstorms also produced high rainfall rates for a prolonged amount of time. This led to flash flooding of a magnitude that had not been seen in decades.

Began near Hoxie (39.1679, -100.3870).
