The wider storm

A potent mid-level shortwave brought a cold front to the Mid-Atlantic on the afternoon and evening of June 22. Thunderstorms ahead of the front developed and delivered damaging wind gusts along and east of the Blue Ridge. Surface air temperatures in the mid-80s and dew points in the 70s provided instability for storms to intensify. SBCAPE of 1000-2000 J/kg and bulk shear of 25-35 knots set favorable conditions for the organization and strengthening of these storms. DCAPE of 900-1200 J/kg resulted in scattered storms delivering damaging wind gusts and numerous downed power lines and trees in north-central North Carolina. A few swaths of damage were reported in the counties of Surry, Stokes, Rockingham, and Caswell with at least one report of a tree falling onto a house.

Began near Volunteer (36.3744, -80.3751).
