An ice climber was killed when an avalanche one-quarter mile across swept 2,000 feet down a mountainside and spilled over the edge of a steep slope he was climbing. His climbing partner was uninjured. The two climbers experienced two smaller avalanches prior to the fatal slide during their more than 1,000 foot ascent. The slide occurred on The Main Vein, a popular climbing spot on the upper South Fork of the Shoshone River.
