Event narrative

A 20-year-old Boynton Beach resident drowned when caught in a rip current just north of Lake Worth Pier. The victim was swimming about 200 yards offshore. Two people attempted to rescue the victim to no avail.

City lifeguards had already left for the day, and there had been warning flags posted throughout the day.

Wider weather episode

Persistent onshore southeasterly winds along the Palm Beach County coast led to the formation of rip currents.
