Wider weather episode
At least two waterspouts occurred on Lake Michigan on Sunday morning July 19th. One of the waterspouts was photographed as it came ashore near Lake Macatawa north of Holland around 11 am. No damage was reported as the waterspout quickly dissipated once it moved inland. Waterspouts over Lake Michigan typically occur in September and October when cold air moves over the warmer waters of Lake Michigan, but the unusually cool and unstable air across the Great Lakes region on the 19th was enough to generate the strong updrafts which spawned these funnels.
