What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A tornado touched down near Mills Darden Road. The tornado moved northeast and lifted near Old Jackson Road. A few outbuildings were damaged or destroyed along the path. Multiple trees and power lines were knocked down as well. A mobile home was moved from the foundation into a power pole.

The wider storm

A cold front approached the Mid-South during the afternoon hours of July 30th, 2009. A low pressure center developed along the front as the front moved into the area. The low pressure helped to spawn several tornadoes across the Mid-South. In addition, other storms produced damaging winds, large hail and flash flooding into the evening hours.

Began near Chapel Hill (35.6113, -88.5007).
