Event narrative
Numerous thunderstorms occurred in the waters around Baranof Island on the afternoon of September 16th. Several gusts to 40 knots were observed at Sitka airport from 1401 to 1500 AKST. Buoy 46083 had a gusts to 33 knots around 1500 AKST. Cape Decision had gusts to 42 knots at 1600 AKST. The Biorka radar had continuous strong cell echoes from 1400 to 1800 AKST.
Wider weather episode
On September 16, an upper level disturbance moved over the Eastern Gulf of Alaska. Cold air aloft over the warm waters of the Gulf caused numerous thunderstorms especially for the waters around Baranof Island. Frequent lightning was observed both visually and from the Canadian lightning detection system that afternoon.
