What the National Weather Service wrote

Lightning struck a cattle rancher as he was checking his cattle. The rancher and one calf were killed from the bolt.

The wider storm

Widespread heavy rainfall and flooding occurred across southeast Kansas and the Missouri Ozarks. The heavy rainfall was associated with several rounds of efficient rain producing stratiform events along a stalled warm front. Isolated convective elements embedded in the system and a few ahead of the system also produce some enhanced rainfall.

Began near Phillipsburg (37.5800, -92.8200).
