Event narrative

Freezing rain and freezing drizzle, mixed at times with snow, produced a light glazing of ice, making driving and walking surfaces very slick. A man from Minnesota was killed when his vehicle slid off Interstate 90 near Brandon and rolled in a ditch.

Wider weather episode

Freezing rain produced ice accumulations around a quarter inch or a little more in Union County in extreme southeast South Dakota. Travel and walking were made extremely hazardous, and power lines and trees were damaged. Lesser ice accumulations were reported to the north and west, to the Sioux Falls and Yankton areas, producing slippery conditions in those areas.
