Event narrative

Major flooding on the Passaic River caused evacuations of hundreds of residents in the towns of Totowa and Little Falls. Dozens refused to leave and eventually needed to be rescued by boat. Severe flooding occurred in numerous homes and businesses close to the river which crested on March 16. Numerous roads and bridges were also closed for several days. More than 800 homes and businesses incurred damage in Totowa. The property damage amount listed is estimated.

Wider weather episode

A Nor'easter developed off the Delmarva peninsula which produced an extended period of heavy rainfall across the area as it tracked very slowly to the northeast. This caused widespread flooding across portions of northeast New Jersey.
