Direct deaths

Event narrative

Two people were swept out to sea due to strong rip currents along Nassau County Atlantic Ocean facing beaches. One death occurred at 645 pm EDT at Long Beach and a second at 745 pm EDT at Jones Beach.

Wider weather episode

The combination of low pressure tracking southeast of the region and a stalled low pressure system off the Southeast U.S. Coast brought strong northeast winds and long period southeast swells to the coast of Long Island. These winds and swells created rough surf at the Atlantic Ocean Beaches and strong rip currents.
