Excessive Heat — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
2010-06-27 · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Wider weather episode
Two more days of unseasonably hot and humid weather in and around Philadelphia claimed the lives of two more people within the city. High temperatures reached in the mid 90s (95 and 96 degrees respectively) on the 27th and 28th and combined with the humid air mass to produce afternoon heat indices of around 100F. The Philadelphia Corporation for Aging hotline fielded about 150 calls for assistance during the two days. In Philadelphia, a 46-year-old woman was found dead in bed in a first floor bedroom of her home. All the doors and windows were shut and there was no air conditioning or fan. An 88-year-old man was also found dead in bed on the first floor of his home. A box fan was running, but all the windows were closed. Thunderstorms and then a cold front that moved through the area ended the excessive heat.
The unseasonably hot weather throughout June made June 2010 the hottest June on record in Philadelphia. The monthly mean temperature of 78.2 degrees surpassed June of 1925 (78.0 degrees). The 15 days with maximum temperatures of 90 degrees or higher tied June 1943 for the most. It was also tied for the 9th warmest June on record (72.1 degrees) on record at the Lehigh Valley International Airport, tied for the 4th warmest June (74.6 degrees) on record at the Reading Regional Airport (Berks County) and the 7th warmest June on record (66.3 degrees) at the Pocono Regional Airport (Monroe County).
