Event narrative

Shortly after 7 pm on Tuesday June 29th, 14 yr old Scott McLeish of Flatlands was swept to sea by a rip current. His body was not recovered. The incident happened after life guards went off duty, and boy was not a strong swimmer.

Strong rip currents were reported at Jones Beach and Robert Moses, with dangerous rip currents at Hither Hills.

Wider weather episode

Strong southerly winds developed ahead of an approaching cold front which trailed a low pressure system tracking through Central New England. Rough surf and strong rip currents developed along the Atlantic Ocean Facing beaches as a result.
