Event narrative
A 44-year-old man died trying to save a woman who was caught in a rip current about 300 yards north of the Dania Beach Pier. The victim along with 4 other people jumped in the water to save the woman, who according to police, was drunk.
Winds were east at 15 to 20 mph, ideal conditions for rip currents to form.
No lifeguards were on duty at the time of the incident.

Moderate to strong easterly winds led to the formation of strong rip currents along the Atlantic beaches of South Florida.
