Excessively high heat indices were recorded in the late morning and afternoon hours of both the 3rd and 4th. On the 3rd, the heat index peaked near 115 degrees at the Evansville airport. Similar values were measured elsewhere in southwest Indiana. Heat indices only fell into the mid 80's at sunrise. On the 4th, heat indices peaked at 110 at Evansville. Actual air temperatures reached 102 degrees at Evansville on the 4th. Ten persons were treated for heat-related illnesses at an Evansville hospital. The heat was blamed for the deaths of two dogs at two separate residences in Evansville. Police found both dogs outdoors with no water. A large, strong high in the upper levels of the atmosphere overspread the southern half of the nation.
