A sailboat dragged anchor, causing its mast to strike a phase of the power transmission line over Niles Channel. A power outage to approximately 16,000 customers west of Big Pine Key occurred with restoration completed around 130 am EST.
Wider weather episode
A line of strong thunderstorms moved north from the Atlantic waters, crossing the Middle and Lower Florida Keys. Wind gusts to gale force occurred across a greater-than 40 mile stretch of the Florida Keys.
