Heavy Snow — Lower Koyukuk Middle Ykn Vlys, Alaska

2010-10-19 to 2010-10-20 · Lower Koyukuk Middle Ykn Vlys, Alaska

Wider weather episode

An upper level low developed in the Norton Sound during the afternoon of the 19th and produced the first significant snowfall of the season across the Middle Yukon Valley. The low caused a strong south flow to develop and transported moisture into the area. Temperatures were just cold enough to support snow and some of the snow fell heavily at times. Snowfall amounts ranged from 6 to 8 inches across the area. The cooperative observer in Galena observed a total of 8 inches of snow and there were public reports from Huslia of 7 to 8 inches of snow. Six inches of snow was observed by the public at Ruby through 1100AKST on the 20th, but additional accumulating snow likely occurred during the afternoon and evening hours.
