High Wind — Sern P.w. Snd, Alaska
2010-11-16 · Sern P.w. Snd, Alaska
Event narrative
Based upon Strawberry Reef observations and rule of thumb to double the observed peak gust as an estimate of wind in the main wind channel of the Copper River Delta.
Wider weather episode
A strong storm in the Gulf of Alaska coupled with high pressure and cold air in interior Alaska produced strong outflow gap wind through the Chugach Mountains. Recent snow in the Chugach Mountains was suspended in the intense north wind through the Thompson Pass. The peak gust for this event was measured at 108 KT at the Thompson Pass RWIS. The Copper River Delta does not have observation equipment, therefore the wind for that region is estimated and assumed to have reached at least 80 mph based upon the observed pressure gradient between Glennallen and Cordova and the observed wind in Thompson Pass.
