Event narrative

Accumulating hail on Interstate 40 about 5 miles west of Williams caused at least 9 crashes. Three cars rolled over and six cars slid off the road. One person was ejected from their car. Two people had serious injuries and four people had minor injuries. The Interstate was closed for about 70 minutes while the wrecks were cleared.

Wider weather episode

A cut off low moving eastward across Arizona produced widespread showers and scattered thunderstorms. Instability caused by daytime heating allowed one thunderstorm to intensify enough to produce a tornado in northern Apache County. Other thunderstorms produced hail across the area. Hail on Interstate 40 caused wrecks and a road closure.
