Event narrative

A high school student attending Regan High School was killed on his way to school when his SUV slid on a patch of ice then striking a tree. Rapidly clearing skies allowed temperatures to fall below freezing in the morning resulting in areas of ice on road surfaces. Numerous other accidents were reported.

Wider weather episode

On the morning of January 6 and period of light rain overnight was followed by rapidly clear skies occurring right at daybreak. Clear skies and and rapidly falling temperatures allowed conditions to fall below freezing for about an hour. This resulted in wet road surfaces freezing into areas of ice. Numerous accidents were reported across the county between 730 am and 9 am. One high school student was killed on his way to schools when his SUV slid on ice and struck a tree.
