Event narrative

A 70 year old Hosmer man died on the 22nd in a two vehicle accident on South Dakota Highway 10 three miles west of Eureka. He was a passenger in a pickup truck that lost control on the heavy snowpacked highway and collided with a van. The driver of the pickup and the people in the van were also injured but, not seriously.

Wider weather episode

An area of low pressure moved northeast across the region from Sunday night through the morning hours on Monday. While this system brought snowfall amounts generally from 1 to 5 inches, a narrow frontal band of 6 to 12 inches occurred over north central South Dakota. A fatality occurred in a two vehicle accident in Mcpherson county. Snowfall amounts in this southwest to northeast frontal band included; 6 inches in Eureka; 7 inches in Roscoe and 5W Sully Buttes; 8 inches in Gettysburg; 9 inches in Bowdle and 11E of Hosmer; 10 inches in Leola with a foot of snow falling 4 miles northwest of Elm Lake.
