Event narrative

A prolonged period of light snow and freezing rain in the morning resulted a half inch of snow with a tenth of an inch of freezing rain. This combination created hazardous driving conditions during the morning commute. An eight year old was killed when she was ejected from a vehicle with lost control on ice near Garland. The child was reported to not have been wearing a seat belt according to Highway Patrol.

Wider weather episode

A weak storm system tracking west to east across the state combined with cold air to produce a prolonged period of light snow and light freezing rain. Many location experienced enough icing to cause accidents. Due to the snow and ice falling in the morning near rush hour numerous accidents were reported. Three individuals were killed in Central North Carolina as a result of these accidents.
