Event narrative

Strong wind caused a double-trunked, 100 foot tall Oak tree to snap at its base and fall onto an occupied cabin-like tent near Mark West Springs. A seven-year-old girl and her grandmother were playing as the tree crashed to the ground resulting in the death of the 70-year-old woman. The girl was not physically injured.

Wider weather episode

A strong trough moved along the northern California coast bringing heavy rain and strong wind to the San Francisco Bay Area and central coast. Localized flooding, damaging wind, downed trees and power lines, and minor debris flows all occurred during this last week of the year. More than 77,000 households and businesses lost power during this storm.
