What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

This Tornado carried two empty grain silos about 100 feet, snapped off or uprooted dozens of trees, destroyed a large portion of an outbuilding, and severely injured a dog. Maximum sustained winds with this Tornado were estimated to be 95 mph.

The wider storm

Phasing of jet streams allowed for a rapidly developing low pressure system. Large scale dynamics and instability allowed for several low topped supercells to develop primarily along and ahead of a cold front over portions of western counties of our area.

Began near Islandton (32.8917, -80.9061).
