Event narrative

Two and one half inches of total snowfall accumulation occurred across the county. A newspaper reported that the Nashville Metro Police Department Officers reported 100 accident as roads quickly became snow covered across the area during the first couple hours of snowfall. In total, the Nashville Metro Police Deaprtment and the Tennessee Highway Patrol reported a combined 272 accidents, including 48 with injuries. Details concerning damage to individual vehicles and damage costs were unknown. This total snowfall accumulation also resulted in closures or postponement of civic engagements across the county for the remainder of that day and night on Wednesday, February 9th, as travel across roads throughout the county became hazardous due to the accumulating snowfall.

Wider weather episode

With temperatures from the afternoon through evening hours remaining in the 20s, there was enough moisture associated with a west to east moving cold frontal passage and southwesterly upper level flow aloft, across the mid state for a significant snowfall event to occur across all of Middle Tennessee on Wednesday, February 9th. Total snowfall accumulations ranged from one half of an inch to five inches across northern portions of the Cumberland Plateau.
