Event narrative
Straight line winds caused widespread damage across Dyer County from the Mississippi River through Dyersburg and into Newbern. Forty-four houses, twenty-nine mobile homes, six businesses and nineteen farm buildings were destroyed. Thirty-eight houses, six mobile homes and eight farm buildings suffered major damage. Many trees were also knocked down.
Wider weather episode
A strong area of low pressure moved from the Southern Plains into the Middle Mississippi Valley from April 19th into April 20th. A trailing cold front moved into the Mid-South during the nighttime hours of April 19th resulting in numerous severe storms with large hail and damaging wind. This front slowly moved across the region eventually stalling across North Mississippi on April 20th resulting in more severe storms.
