Event narrative

A severe thunderstorm knocked down a few trees in the northeast part of Manchester Township and resulted in a fatality. A 69-year-old man was killed on County Route 571 in front of the Ridgeway Elementary School when two trees fell onto his vehicle. A police officer was injured trying to extricate the man from the vehicle.

Wider weather episode

A weak surface trough acted as a trigger to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms that developed across central and northern New Jersey during the second half of the afternoon on the 22nd. There was one storm related death in Ocean County. A funnel cloud was sighted in Ocean County, but did not touch down. Jersey Central Power and Light reported about 10,000 homes and businesses lost power.
