Event narrative
Lightning sparked a wildfire in the Holly Shelter Game Land. On June 20th, the fire grew rapidly on gusty northwest winds, 100 degree heat, and an ongoing severe drought. Several homes in the Traders Neck and Castle Bay developments near Hampstead were evacuated briefly, but no structures were damaged. The fire grew to over 31,000 acres in the undeveloped Holly Shelter swamp, and continued to burn into July.
