Event narrative

The Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge MCRRP4 wind sensor recorded gusty southeast winds of 41 mph from 1323-1353 AST. The Media Luna La Parguera LPRP4 sensor recorded south southeast wind gusts of 40 mph from 1336-1342 AST. The Magueyes Island MMGIP4 sensor recorded a south southwest wind of 38 mph around 1304 AST. The strong wind gusts may have caused the Lajas aerostat balloon to break its ground contact cables and to become loose according to local newspapers.

Wider weather episode

A tropical wave moving across the Caribbean Waters brought numerous showers and thunderstorms to the near shore Caribbean waters. Strong wind gusts of over 40 mph winds were reported along southwest Puerto Rico during the early afternoon.
