Event narrative

A mother and daughter drowned when they attempted to wade through a rain-swollen tributary of Irvins Creek, about 9 miles southeast of Center City Charlotte. The approximate time of death was 1:30 pm EST (or 2:30 pm EDT).

Wider weather episode

A slow moving thunderstorm complex affected the western North Carolina piedmont during the late morning and afternoon hours. Rainfall amounts of 4 to 7 inches were reported, resulting in flash flooding in a number of locations.
