Event narrative

A 31-year-old Michigan man drowned while trying to help a friend who had been caught in a rip current. The drowning occurred at the public beach near Ocean and Atlantic Avenues in Delray Beach, after lifeguards had gone home for the day.

Wider weather episode

Increasing east to southeast winds ahead of a low pressure area over the Gulf of Mexico which eventually became Tropical Storm Barry caused favorable conditions for rip currents along Atlantic beaches on May 31st. One person drowned in Delray Beach.
