Event narrative
Well-below normal rainfall since early 2006 produced severe drought conditions across the Lake Okeechobee region of South Florida. Large portions of Glades, Hendry and northern Palm Beach counties were under D2 (severe) drought status. The level of Lake Okeechobee lowered to 10.55 feet, about 3 feet below normal and the lowest level since May 2001. Impacts were primarily to agriculture, with 90 percent of the area's topsoil moisture rated very short to short, and 80 percent of pastures rated very poor to poor.
