Three crabbers died when their boat overturned in heavy surf on the Rogue River bar. Conditions were described as rough, but not terribly rough, and the crew voted to go through the bar. No high surf advisories or warnings were in effect when the incident occurred at 16/1540 PST.

Heavy swell brought high surf to the Southern Oregon coast on these days. A High Surf Warning was in effect for Oregon zone ORZ021 from 13/1819 PST until 15/1540 PST, and for Oregon zone ORZ022 from 14/1600 PST until 15/1540 PST. Three fatalities due to a boat capsizing in heavy surf on the Rogue River bar occurred on 12/16, after all warnings/advisories had been cancelled.
