A severe thunderstorm passing over Sandy Hook, NJ and the adjacent coastal waters produced a 49 mph (43 knot) wind gust at the Sandy Hook WeatherFlow mesonet station. The wind gust was recorded at 12:10 am EDT on the 2nd.
Wider weather episode
A cold front approaching a moist, unstable airmass across the Middle Atlantic region triggered scattered strong to severe thunderstorms from the Eastern Shore of Maryland into portions of Delaware and Pennsylvania during the evening of the 1st. These storms reached the coastal waters of New Jersey and lower Delaware Bay during the late evening and early overnight of the 1st, and a couple of strong wind gusts were recorded.
