A 964 mb storm in the Gulf of Alaska was nearly stationary, along with high pressure of 1037 mb over the Arctic Ocean. These features produced a strong pressure gradient over the Eastern Brooks Range. An occlusion aloft moved north over the eastern interior during this time, strengthening winds over certain summits. The State of Alaska Department of Transportation reported Eagle Summit on the Steese Highway (Zone 220) was closed and that the Dalton Highway through Atigun Pass (Zone 218) was in difficult condition due to zero visibility and winds 70-80 mph (estimated gusts).
